New home for green chemistry and manufacturing
A new multimillion centre supporting globally competitive chemical manufacturing has been established in Victoria.
By using green chemistry to find ‘cleaner’ paths for the production of existing and new products, the centre will assist Australian manufacturing industry to develop more sustainable manufacturing processes.

The Victorian Centre for Sustainable Chemical Manufacturing (VCSCM) is located at the Dulux Group headquarters in Clayton, Melbourne.
Led by Monash University together with CSIRO, the Plastics and Chemicals Industries Association and the Victorian Environment Protection Authority, the Centre will undertake a range of activities. These will enable manufacturers to interact more closely and effectively with the research community to drive improved sustainable manufacturing outcomes.
‘The establishment of the Centre provides a key platform to further assist industry with the development of more sustainable manufacturing processes and innovative products across the whole value chain’, Professor Milton Hearn, Centre Director said.
The Centre represents a model for how demand-driven innovation can work, with good quality science being applied to real-world problems.
By capturing the benefits of green chemistry for the production of existing and new products, the aim is to assist Australian manufacturing industries to evaluate and deploy more sustainable manufacturing processes.
The Centre will increase awareness of the benefits of adopting sustainable manufacturing practices within the manufacturing industry, demonstrating the unique research platforms of Monash University and CSIRO.
CSIRO will contribute to the Centre through projects on flow synthesis for the chemical manufacturing industry, and advanced separation technologies for the food industry.
VCSCM is a component of the Australian Manufacturing and Materials Precinct that aims to the global competitiveness of Australian manufacturing and materials by linking world-class research to industry.
